Sea stars are among the most iconic and recognizable inhabitants of the ocean, often serving as a highlight for anyone visiting the shoreline. While they may appear to be simple organisms, they possess a variety of complex and surprising biological traits. From hidden adhesive feet to the remarkable ability to regenerate entire bodies, these creatures are far more advanced than they seem.
Distinctive Biology and Classification
Despite the common name "starfish," these animals are not fish at all. They lack standard fish characteristics such as scales, fins, and gills. Instead, they are invertebrates belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, making them close relatives of sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. Because they do not have fins, they cannot swim; however, they are far from stationary.
A sea star moves using thousands of tiny structures called tube feet located on the underside of its arms. A single individual can possess up to 15,000 of these feet, which coordinate to pull the animal along the seafloor. Beyond movement, these feet secrete a powerful natural adhesive that allows the sea star to cling to rocks amidst strong tides. When it is time to relocate, the creature produces a chemical solvent to dissolve the bond and move freely.
Unique Anatomy and Feeding Habits
The digestive process of a sea star is both fascinating and unusual. They possess a two-part stomach system that allows them to consume prey larger than their mouths. When feeding, a sea star centers itself over its target and extends its cardiac stomach out through its mouth. This organ releases digestive enzymes directly onto the prey to break down its tissues externally. Once the meal has been partially liquefied, the sea star pulls the stomach and the nutrients back inside to finish the process in its second stomach, the pyloric stomach.
While they may seem docile, most sea stars are aggressive carnivores. Their diet typically includes coral, algae, sponges, and mollusks. However, some species are opportunistic and may even engage in cannibalism, consuming other sea stars when the opportunity arises.
Diversity, Regeneration, and Sensory Perception
The classic five-armed shape is only one variation of this diverse group. With over 2,000 species inhabiting the oceans, some individuals can have 10, 20, or even 50 limbs. The sun star is a notable example, featuring numerous arms arranged like solar rays and weighing over 10 pounds.
Perhaps their most famous "superpower" is the ability to regenerate lost body parts. Because many of their vital organs are distributed throughout their arms, a sea star can regrow a lost limb over time. In some resilient species, a single severed arm can even grow into an entirely new, complete body. This biological resilience contributes to their long lifespans, with some individuals living up to 35 years in the wild.
Finally, while sea stars do not have eyes like mammals, they are not blind. At the tip of each arm is a small, light-sensitive "eye spot." These spots appear as tiny red or black dots and allow the sea star to detect light, dark, and basic shapes, helping them navigate their environment and locate both companions and prey.
