There is something unforgettable about being close to the ocean, especially when the journey itself becomes part of the adventure. Whether you are enjoying a smooth ride in a luxury SUV or experiencing the freedom of driving a convertible with the roof down, coastal roads offer some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. From dramatic cliffs and endless sea views to winding routes through unforgettable landscapes, these seven coastal drives are perfect sources of inspiration for your next road trip.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Any coastline recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is expected to be extraordinary, and Italy’s Amalfi Coast completely lives up to that reputation. Located along the Sorrentine Peninsula south of Naples, this famous route combines breathtaking Mediterranean views with dramatic mountain scenery.

As you travel along Strada Statale 163, the sparkling sea stretches out beside you on one side, while steep cliffs rise on the other. The narrow, winding road follows the rugged landscape, creating a driving experience filled with beautiful views at every turn.

California State Route 1, United States

Stretching for roughly 650 miles along California’s Pacific shoreline, State Route 1 is one of the world’s most recognizable coastal highways. Famous for its unforgettable scenery, it has long been a favorite choice for travelers seeking the perfect ocean road trip.

The Pacific Coast Highway section showcases everything that makes this route special, including sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, towering coastal cliffs, and wide golden beaches. With countless scenic pullouts along the way, drivers can easily stop to admire the landscape and enjoy the atmosphere of the California coast.

Ruta 40, Argentina

Ruta 40 stands out not only because of its scenery but also because of its incredible size. Stretching more than 3,000 miles, it ranks among the longest highways in the world and crosses nearly the entire length of Argentina.

Beginning near La Quiaca in northern Jujuy and continuing south toward Cabo Vírgenes in Santa Cruz, this legendary route offers dramatic views of Patagonia. Travelers can also cross into Chile to experience coastal landscapes, breathtaking Andean peaks, and the vast beauty of the South Pacific.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

Australia’s Great Ocean Road is a legendary coastal drive where the name truly reflects the experience. Running for around 150 miles along Victoria’s southeastern coastline, this route delivers spectacular ocean scenery and unforgettable natural landmarks.

The road attracts countless travelers and motorcycle enthusiasts who come to enjoy its winding curves and dramatic views. Along the way, there are many places to stop and appreciate the scenery, including the famous Twelve Apostles near Port Campbell, where towering limestone formations rise from the sea.

Chapman’s Peak Drive, South Africa

Cape Town is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, thanks to its unique coastline, ocean views, and the impressive presence of Table Mountain. Just outside the city lies Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most scenic roads in South Africa.

This remarkable route stretches for approximately five and a half miles between Hout Bay and Noordhoek along the Atlantic coast. The road curves around the steep mountain slopes, following the nearly vertical cliffs of Chapman’s Peak and offering dramatic views of the ocean below.

Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway

Norway’s Atlantic Ocean Road may be short, but it leaves a powerful impression. Similar to other famous coastal drives, many visitors wish this spectacular route continued for much longer.

The road covers only about five miles of County Road 64 between Kristiansund and Åndalsnes, yet its scenery is unforgettable. A series of beautifully designed bridges connects small islands along the route, with the striking Storseisundet Bridge standing out as the most dramatic highlight.

Route 1, Iceland

Across the Norwegian Sea lies Iceland, home to another incredible coastal driving adventure. Also called the Ring Road, Route 1 circles the country for more than 800 miles and reveals some of Iceland’s most extraordinary natural wonders.

Exploring the entire route can easily take several weeks, as countless attractions invite travelers to stop along the way. Highlights include the powerful Seljalandsfoss waterfall, the breathtaking Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, and Lake Mývatn, a volcanic landscape known for its geothermal activity and relaxing hot springs. This journey offers a perfect combination of ocean views, glaciers, volcanoes, and Iceland’s unique natural beauty.
