With striking silver foliage that feels remarkably soft and velvety, dusty miller is an unusual addition to the landscape. Its attractive appearance is paired with easy care and an ability to withstand frosty winter weather, making it an excellent choice for gardens during the cooler months.
These qualities helped lead LSU AgCenter horticulturists to select dusty miller as a Louisiana Super Plant for 2025.
A Louisiana Garden Favorite
Dusty miller (Centaurea cineraria) has been a familiar plant in Louisiana gardens for many years. LSU AgCenter horticulturist Jason Stagg describes it as one of the most useful plants for adding color to landscapes during fall and winter.
Its remarkable silver coloration is especially valuable in Louisiana, where foliage with such cool tones can be difficult to find. Even better, the color remains attractive for an extended period throughout the cool season.
Garden centers generally begin offering dusty miller around October. Planting it during this period can provide attractive foliage throughout the cool months, continuing into March and even later. Although it is commonly grown as an annual, dusty miller is actually native to the Mediterranean and can survive for several years in warm climates such as Louisiana.
Compact and Versatile Growth
Dusty miller can be used in many different areas of the landscape. It performs well in garden beds, along borders, and in containers. Its growth remains relatively low and rounded, with mature plants generally reaching no more than 1 to 2 feet in both height and width.
Silvery Foliage with Unique Texture
The plant's silver to nearly white leaves are covered with soft hairs and feature deeply divided, lobed shapes. This combination gives dusty miller both visual appeal and an interesting texture.
Its cool silver tones create a strong contrast when planted beside brighter flowers or more colorful foliage. The pale leaves can also catch available light and sometimes give the plants an almost glowing appearance after dark.
A Plant Deer Tend to Avoid
The fuzzy texture of dusty miller serves another useful purpose besides making the foliage pleasant to touch. Deer generally dislike feeding on leaves with noticeable textures, so the plant is less appealing to hungry deer.
Small Yellow Flowers in Spring
Although gardeners primarily grow dusty miller for its foliage, the plant may begin producing small yellow flowers as spring gets closer.
Many gardeners remove the developing flower buds because the blooms can distract from the plant's distinctive leaves. Others view the appearance of the flowers as an indication that the cool-season plants have reached the end of their time in the garden and should be replaced.
Choosing the Right Light
For the strongest silver coloration, dusty miller should ideally be grown in full sun. However, it can also perform well in locations receiving partial sunlight.
Full shade is not recommended. In heavily shaded conditions, the plants can struggle to grow properly and may become stretched and leggy as they search for more light.
Easy Care and Cold Tolerance
One of the main advantages of dusty miller is its simple care requirements. In most situations, the plant does not require fertilizer or specialized maintenance.
After becoming established, dusty miller is tolerant of drought and can also withstand light frosts and freezes. These characteristics make it particularly useful for extending garden interest through the cooler part of the year.
New Cultivars to Try
Gardeners interested in giving this classic cool-season plant a slightly different appearance can try New Look, a newer dusty miller cultivar recommended by Stagg.
New Look produces larger leaves with smoother margins that are not as heavily serrated as those of the older Silverdust cultivar. Cirrus is another option, featuring foliage with less pronounced serration.
Despite their differences in leaf shape and texture, all three cultivars can make excellent additions to cool-season landscapes.

The Vital Ecological Contribution of Rhinos
While many recognize that poaching is a barbaric practice pushing rhinoceros populations toward the brink of collapse, some may wonder why there is such an intense focus on this specific animal. Beyond being iconic symbols of wilderness and major draws for global tourism, rhinos hold a critical position in the natural world. They are classified as a "keystone species," meaning their presence and activities have a disproportionately large impact on the health and diversity of the entire ecosystem.

The Architectural Masterpiece of the Walt Disney Concert Hall
Located at South Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, this cultural landmark serves as a primary venue for the city's music center. Designed by the architect Frank Gehry and opened in the autumn of 2003, the hall accommodates over two thousand guests. It functions as the permanent home for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Master Chorale. The design represents a bold synthesis of architectural philosophies, blending the vineyard-style seating configuration famously utilized by the Berlin Philharmonic with the acoustic intimacy of classical European shoebox designs. Lillian Disney initiated the project in the late eighties with a massive donation, intending the venue as a gift to the city and a tribute to the legacy of the arts. Both the aesthetic vision and the acoustic engineering have earned widespread acclaim, standing in stark contrast to the performance halls that preceded it.
