We live in a world filled with countless choices, particularly when it comes to the products we purchase. From everyday essentials such as toothbrushes to major electronics like televisions, consumers can choose from hundreds of brands and models that often differ only in small details. When we buy products we have used for years, we usually know what works for us, so making a decision is relatively simple.

Choosing an electric scooter, especially when purchasing one for the first time, is different. It is important to understand your requirements and compare the available options before making a decision. India has a growing selection of intelligent and capable electric scooters, but knowing which model suits you best requires looking beyond the obvious question of price. Here are the major factors to consider before buying an electric scooter.

Factor 1: Electric Scooter Range

Range is one of the most important specifications to examine. It refers to the approximate distance an electric scooter can travel after receiving a full charge. Although a longer range may sound attractive, buying the model with the highest claimed figure is not necessarily the best choice. Instead, consider how far you actually need to travel each day.

The Ather 450X, for example, offers a certified range of 150 km on a full battery. But does the average rider really require that much?

Based on insights collected from more than 1 billion km of riding data, the typical electric scooter rider travels approximately 25–30 km per day. This represents less than 30% of the battery capacity available after a complete overnight charge. Consequently, for many riders, charging the scooter overnight for around 6–8 hours using the supplied Ather charger can provide enough energy for approximately three to four days of normal use.

If you occasionally need to travel beyond the scooter's standard range, Ather also offers access to public fast-charging infrastructure across the country. With compatible fast chargers, riders can add as much as 15 km of range in approximately 10 minutes.

Factor 2: Battery and Charging

The battery is a fundamental component of any electric scooter and deserves as much attention as the vehicle itself. Like the batteries used in smartphones, laptops, cars, and other devices, scooter batteries gradually lose capacity as they age and accumulate usage. This eventual battery replacement cost should therefore be considered when calculating the overall ownership expense.

A strong battery warranty can help protect owners from unexpected costs caused by long-term degradation. Ather's Eight70 battery protection program is designed for this purpose. For an additional ₹4,999 over AtherStack Pro, the program extends the standard three-year or 30,000 km manufacturer warranty to eight years or 80,000 km.

The program also includes a performance guarantee and battery replacement without additional charges under its specified conditions. Instead of waiting until a battery stops functioning completely, the warranty can cover replacement when the battery's state of health falls below 70% of its original performance. It also provides full protection against qualifying defects and failures without a stated maximum number of claims, along with idle-state protection designed to prevent deep discharge when the battery has remained unused and uncharged for an extended period.

Such coverage can reduce the potential long-term expense associated with battery degradation and, consequently, help lower the overall cost of owning an electric scooter.

Factor 3: Electric Scooter Performance

Top speed is another straightforward specification to compare, but a higher maximum speed does not automatically mean a scooter is better suited to your lifestyle. If most of your riding takes place in congested urban areas, traffic conditions may prevent you from reaching the scooter's maximum capability anyway.

For riders who enjoy stronger acceleration and faster performance, however, the Ather 450X offers a top speed of 90 km/h. Its Warp mode can accelerate the scooter from 0 to 40 km/h in approximately 3.3 seconds.

The Ather 450 Apex goes further, reaching a claimed maximum speed of 100 km/h. With Warp+ mode activated, it can accelerate from 0 to 40 km/h in around 2.9 seconds.

These scooters may not belong to the superbike category, but they still provide impressive performance for electric two-wheelers.

Factor 4: Electric Scooter Design and Smart Features

Design and connected technology may not be as important as range, battery reliability, or performance, but they can still play a major role in your buying decision. Appearance is largely a matter of personal taste. Some riders may prefer the sporty and futuristic styling of the Ather 450X, while others may favor the more practical, family-focused appearance of the Ather Rizta. Both are designed and manufactured in India with Indian riders in mind.

Ather scooters also operate using an Android-based platform known as AtherStack. This software foundation enables a range of connected functions that distinguish the scooters from many competitors. Available features include Google Maps navigation displayed on the dashboard, Park Assist™, AutoHold™, location sharing through WhatsApp, Trip Planner, and various other smart functions.

Factor 5: Take a Test Ride

Specifications and feature lists are useful for comparing electric scooters on paper, but they cannot tell you exactly how a particular scooter feels on the road. Before making your final decision, it is therefore important to test ride every model that remains on your shortlist.

A test ride lets you evaluate factors such as acceleration, handling, braking, seating position, comfort, ride quality, and overall usability. These details can make a significant difference to your experience and are difficult to judge from numbers alone.

Your electric scooter may accompany you on daily commutes, errands, weekend trips, and many other important journeys for years. Ultimately, it needs to feel comfortable and natural for you to ride.

So, Which Electric Scooter Should You Choose?

So, what is the ideal electric scooter for you? The Ather 450X is certainly a strong contender because it performs well across many of the categories discussed above, and its riding experience is particularly appealing.

However, the final decision should still be yours. Compare the strengths and weaknesses of the electric scooters that interest you, create a shortlist, arrange test rides, and evaluate which model best fits your daily requirements, budget, riding habits, and personal preferences. Once you have considered all of these factors, you will be in a much better position to choose the electric scooter that is right for you.
