Why do boobies have blue feet?

The bright blue feet of the Blue-footed Booby (Sula nebouxii) are the feature that makes this bird instantly recognizable and gives it its famous name. Like many biological traits, the reason behind this unusual characteristic can be understood from different perspectives.

The direct cause of the blue coloration is related to carotenoid pigments obtained from the birds’ diet. These pigments accumulate in the feet, creating their distinctive blue appearance. During mating displays, males perform a special dance in which they lift and show off their feet to attract females.
