Understanding Your Sleepy Cat

Cats spend a significant portion of their day sleeping—on average, about 12 to 13 hours daily. Senior cats may sleep even more, and much of this rest happens during daylight hours. While it might seem that cats are the ultimate nappers among mammals, some animals, such as koalas, bats, and opossums, actually sleep even longer.

Why Cats Sleep So Much

The exact reasons behind feline sleep patterns are still not fully understood, but several theories exist. One explanation is that a cat’s sleep requirement corresponds to its energy expenditure. As predators, cats burn enormous amounts of energy in short bursts while stalking, pouncing, and capturing prey—or in the case of indoor cats, toys. This high-energy lifestyle could explain why cats need so much rest daily.

Additionally, cats rarely sleep in a single, extended stretch. Instead, they tend to nap in short cycles, typically lasting 60 to 90 minutes. This pattern may be linked to their small body size and frequent need to hunt and eat. Larger animals, which can consume larger meals, may consolidate sleep into longer periods.

Fascinating Facts About Feline Sleep

Cats’ sleep patterns resemble those of humans and other mammals, featuring two primary phases: non-REM and REM sleep. Researchers have studied these stages using an electroencephalograph (EEG), which records brain activity as wave patterns.

When awake, a cat’s brain produces irregular, clustered waves. During non-REM sleep, slow, irregular waves appear—this is known as slow-wave sleep, typically lasting 12 to 15 minutes per cycle. Cats may sleep with their heads upright and paws tucked beneath them, or even sitting, muscles stiffened to allow quick reactions if needed.

In REM sleep, cats relax completely, often stretching out or rolling to one side. Brain waves become smaller and more closely spaced, resembling wakefulness. Eye movements, characteristic of REM sleep, give the phase its name. Cats are more deeply asleep in REM but can still awaken if startled. This stage usually lasts 2 to 10 minutes before returning to slow-wave sleep, and cats alternate between these two phases until fully awake.

Do Cats Dream?

Cats experience the same sleep stages as humans, and since humans dream during REM, many scientists believe cats do too. Observing a twitching paw or soft meows from a sleeping cat may suggest they are “chasing dream mice.”

Even while asleep, cats remain aware of their environment, responding quickly to sounds and smells. Upon waking, cats typically follow a routine: blinking, yawning, stretching front legs, then back legs, and finally rear legs. Most cats also groom themselves shortly after rising.

Unlike humans, who often sleep for long, uninterrupted periods, cats take multiple naps throughout the day. Sleep habits vary by age—kittens and older cats sleep more than adult cats. Sleep duration may also increase during cold, rainy, or cloudy days, or when cats are bored or understimulated.

Historical Insights: REM Sleep in Cats

In 1958, William Dement identified REM sleep in cats. Around the same time, French physiologist Michel Jouvet advanced sleep research significantly, dubbing REM sleep “paradoxical sleep” due to its seemingly contradictory nature: animals exhibit signs of being awake, even while asleep. This discovery led scientists to hypothesize that animals might be acting out dreams during REM sleep.

Cats’ Daily Activity Patterns

Cats are naturally most active at dawn and dusk, which is why they often play vigorously at these times and may interrupt their owners’ sleep. Despite this, many cats adapt their schedule to match their human companions. They tend to nap when you are away and stay awake while you are home, maximizing time for interaction and play.

Best Minivans of 2026

For most “best of” lists, we usually break a broad category (like hybrid cars) into smaller segments and pick a winner for each, sometimes adding a runner-up just in case our top choice doesn’t suit everyone’s taste. That approach doesn’t really work for minivans, though.
