Amazing Shell Beaches Around the World

Seashells are usually the empty remains of marine mollusks that are carried onto shore by waves and tides. While most beaches around the world are made up of materials such as sand, stones, gravel, or pebbles, a few rare coastal areas are almost entirely covered with shells. Seashells are usually the empty remains of marine mollusks that are carried onto shore by waves and tides. While most beaches around the world are made up of materials such as sand, stones, gravel, or pebbles, a few rare coastal areas are almost entirely covered with shells. These unusual beaches contain millions of broken and complete shells, creating landscapes unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Here are four extraordinary shell-covered beaches found around the world.

Shell Beach, Western Australia

Shell Beach is located about 45 kilometers southeast of Denham in Western Australia’s Shark Bay region. Extending for more than 120 kilometers along the coast, this remarkable beach is covered with countless tiny white shells that form layers reaching up to 10 meters deep.

The unusual abundance of shells is linked to the high salt levels found in the waters of L’Haridon Bight. The area’s climate and geographical conditions create an environment where cockles can thrive with few natural predators. Over thousands of years, generations of cockles died naturally and their shells were carried onto the shore, gradually creating the vast shell-covered landscape seen today.

The shell deposits do not stop at the beach itself. Layers of shells continue beneath the shallow waters, extending hundreds of meters offshore. In some higher areas away from the shoreline, the shells have become naturally compressed and bonded together, forming solid limestone-like structures known as coquina.

Today, parts of the shell deposits are collected under strict regulations and used for products such as calcium supplements for poultry and decorative garden materials. In the past, blocks made from these hardened shells were also used as a building material in the nearby town of Denham.

Sanibel Island, Florida, USA

Sanibel Island is famous worldwide for its incredible collection of seashells that regularly appear along its beaches. One of the main reasons for this unusual concentration is the island’s rare east-west orientation. Unlike many barrier islands that run from north to south, Sanibel’s position allows its southern coastline to act like a natural scoop, collecting shells carried by ocean currents from the Caribbean and surrounding southern waters.

Seashells have played an important role in Sanibel’s history, culture, and economy since the time of the Calusa Native Americans. Today, thousands of visitors travel to Sanibel and nearby Captiva Island each week during the busy season, hoping to find unique shells along the shore.

The famous activity of searching for shells while bending down over the sand has even earned a local nickname: the “Sanibel Stoop.” Visitors can also explore shell collections at local stores, museums, and special events such as the annual Sanibel Shell Fair, where shells are celebrated in many forms.

Shell Beach, Saint Barthélemy

Located on the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy, Shell Beach, also known as Grande Galet, is one of the island’s most popular coastal destinations. Its close location to the town of Gustavia makes it a favorite stop for both visitors and cruise passengers.

The beach is covered with a wide variety of shells, including many unusual shapes and sizes. Waves and tides constantly move and rearrange these shells, meaning the appearance of the shoreline is always changing. The combination of clear Caribbean waters, soft sand, and countless seashells creates a unique and attractive beach experience.

Jeffreys Bay, South Africa

Jeffreys Bay, located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, is well known for its beautiful coastline, seafood, surfing culture, and impressive collection of seashells. Although its shell-covered beaches are not as extensive as those of Western Australia or Sanibel Island, the area remains a favorite destination for shell enthusiasts.

The town’s Shell Museum contains more than 600 species of shells from around the world, making it one of the largest shell collections in South Africa. The museum attracts visitors who are fascinated by marine life and natural history.

Every September, Jeffreys Bay hosts the Shell Festival, an event that has been celebrated for more than two decades. The festival brings together local residents and travelers to appreciate seashells through exhibitions, crafts, and cultural activities.

Beyond its shells, Jeffreys Bay is also internationally recognized as a major surfing destination. It is considered one of the world’s top surfing locations and regularly hosts the Billabong Pro ASP World Tour event at Supertubes during July, attracting professional surfers from around the globe.
