Tokyo Pet Guide

Not all small birds are easy to identify—but this guide highlights ten common types, based on their features, habitats, and feeding behaviors. Whether you’re spotting birds in the wild or around your home, here are some standout species worth knowing.

Woodpeckers

These tree-loving birds are found across much of the globe, except in Australia, Madagascar, and Antarctica. Recognizable by their pointed beaks and tapping behavior, woodpeckers vary in color—often displaying brown, olive, or patterned feathers. They thrive in wooded environments and feed primarily on insects hidden under bark. To invite them to your yard, try spreading peanut butter on tree trunks or offering shelled peanuts.

Hummingbirds

Tiny and energetic, hummingbirds are exclusive to the Americas. With their shimmering feathers and long beaks, they measure just 3 to 5 inches. They sip nectar and catch insects mid-air. A garden with nectar-rich red or orange flowers, like bee balm, can help attract them

Finches

These colorful, seed-loving birds are found on every continent except Antarctica. Many species are vibrant in yellow, red, green, or brown, and often show dimorphic coloring between sexes. Finches are known for their melodic songs and quick, bouncy flight. Black oil sunflower seeds are especially appealing to them.

Chickadees

A familiar sight in North America, chickadees are small, round-bodied birds with dark caps and bibs that contrast with their pale undersides. They're known for their “chick-a-dee” call and ability to store seeds for winter. Offer suet or sunflower seeds in your feeder to attract them.

Warblers

Often brightly colored in yellows, oranges, and reds, warblers are active insectivores common in the Americas. They prefer wooded and shrubby habitats. With their soft, metallic notes and arboreal lifestyle, they're drawn to areas with birdhouses or mealworms.

Kinglets

Among the tiniest songbirds, kinglets have green-gray feathers with delicate wing bars and sharp, small beaks. They inhabit coniferous forests and have a high metabolic rate, requiring frequent feeding. Place suet or peanut hearts out to help attract them during migration.

Wrens

Wrens vary in size and color but are often brown or gray with subtly barred feathers. Some species, like the fairy-wren, display vivid blue during the breeding season. They’re known for aggressive nesting habits and wide-ranging diets. Use tray feeders with suet and peanuts to catch their interest.

Vireos

These often-overlooked birds are green or yellowish and prefer forest habitats throughout the Americas. Their songs are repetitive, and they build cup-shaped hanging nests. Insect suet and fruit pieces are good offerings for these small foragers.

Gnatcatchers

These agile birds weigh less than a penny and sport blue-gray plumage with long tails. They’re active insect hunters with squeaky calls and quick movements. While they don’t usually visit feeders, a natural, insect-friendly yard may bring them close.

North American Buntings

With bold colors in males and streaked brown plumage in females, buntings are eye-catching visitors to shrubby and edge habitats. They enjoy seeds, insects, and berries. You can attract them with millet and nyger seed or by growing native flowering plants.
