The Incredible Evolution and True History of the Noble Horse
We must travel back to the absolute dawn of animal history to understand the origin of the horse. Imagine a miniature creature that lived roughly fifty to sixty million years ago. This tiny animal thrived during the ancient Eocene epoch. It was only about the size of a modern fox. Scientists officially call this ancient ancestral creature Hyracotherium. The animal looked very different from the magnificent horses we see today. However it still bore a faint resemblance to its modern descendants. Hyracotherium possessed four distinct toes on its front feet. It also had three toes on its rear feet. This skeletal structure is incredibly fascinating to modern biologists. The tropical tapir is a living relative of the horse family. It still retains this exact same arrangement of toes on its feet today.

The Humble Beginnings of a Tiny Prehistoric Ancestor
This ancient creature lived and searched for food in the dense primeval forests. These woodlands covered the regions we now know as Europe and Asia. Another very similar animal was developing simultaneously in a different part of the world. This region is the land mass we now call North America. The two continents were actually connected by a massive land bridge during that ancient era. This American forest dweller also remained quite small. It spent its days eating soft leaves under the canopy. Researchers gave this creature the beautiful name Eohippus or the dawn horse. Modern paleontologists largely agree that Eohippus and Hyracotherium were actually the exact same species.
The Gradual Transformation Into a Large Grazing Animal
A completely new horse like creature emerged about thirty-seven to thirty-two million years ago. This evolving animal grew significantly larger than its tiny ancestors. It reached the approximate physical size of a young lamb. This new creature is known to science as Mesohippus. It possessed only three toes on each foot. Its middle toe was steadily growing larger to provide the main support for its body weight. Mesohippus also developed much stronger teeth than the older dawn horse. This dental adaptation allowed the animal to consume tough grass alongside soft forest leaves.
Even bigger and more advanced models appeared over the millions of years that followed. Merychippus arrived on the scene roughly seventeen million years ago. Then the remarkable Pliohippus evolved about twelve million years ago. Pliohippus successfully developed true single toes that eventually became solid hooves. It also shifted its primary diet entirely to grass. This evolutionary milestone changed their future forever. Modern science places all horses inside the specialized order Perissodactyla. This ancient Greek term translates quite simply to odd toed or one toe.
The Modern Equine Family and Living Wild Relatives
The wider Equidae family includes all surviving horse like creatures on Earth today. This diverse group contains majestic domestic horses and sturdy asses as well as striped zebras. Only one true species of completely wild horse still survives in our modern world. This legendary animal is the famous Przewalski horse or the Mongolian wild horse. The species is currently highly endangered due to human activity. Thankfully it is no longer considered completely extinct in the wild.
Anatomically modern human beings finally evolved around three hundred thousand years ago. Horses had already roamed the earth for millions of years before humans even arrived. They are true survivors of our planet history.
