Humans have relied on camels for more than 4,000 years, and these remarkable animals continue to play an important role in helping people survive and work in many parts of the world. Working Animals International supports thousands of camels every year through its projects in Tunisia and India. Here are some fascinating facts that explain what makes camels so well adapted to challenging environments.
There Are Two Main Types of Camels
There are two living types of camel. The dromedary has a single hump, while the Bactrian camel has two humps.
Camels Have Excellent Protection for Their Eyes
Camels have two layers of long eyelashes. These eyelashes help shield their eyes from blowing sand and dust, which is especially useful when they are traveling through deserts.
Their Lips Help Them Eat Thorny Plants
A camel’s lips are thick and tough, allowing it to feed on thorny vegetation that many other animals would avoid. This gives camels access to food sources that are difficult for other herbivores to eat.
Camels Can Close Their Nostrils
During severe sandstorms, camels can shut their nostrils almost completely. This special ability helps prevent sand from entering their respiratory system while they are exposed to harsh desert winds.
Their Skin Helps Them Handle Hot Ground
Camels have thick protective patches of skin on areas such as their chests and knees. These hardened pads allow them to kneel and rest directly on extremely hot sand without discomfort.
A Camel’s Hump Stores Fat
A camel’s hump can hold as much as 80 pounds of fat. This stored energy can sustain the animal for weeks or even months when food is difficult to find.
The concentrated fat reserve also plays an important role in helping the camel manage its body temperature and provides energy when food and water are limited. Contrary to a common misconception, the hump itself does not store water.
Camels Can Drink Huge Amounts of Water
When a camel finally reaches a dependable source of water after going without it, it can drink an astonishing amount in a short period. A camel may consume as much as 40 gallons of water at once.
Camels Are Powerful Working Animals
Camels are remarkably strong and have long been used to transport people and goods. A working camel can carry loads of up to 900 pounds and may travel approximately 25 miles in a single day.
Camels Can Run Surprisingly Fast
Their large size does not prevent camels from moving quickly. Under the right conditions, they can reach speeds of around 40 miles per hour, comparable to the speed of a racehorse.
Camels May Spit When They Feel Threatened
It is best not to provoke a camel. When one feels threatened or irritated, it may spit toward the perceived danger. This behavior can serve as a distraction and give the animal a chance to respond to whatever it considers a threat.
Camel Pregnancy Lasts More Than a Year
Female camels have a remarkably long pregnancy. A mother can carry her developing calf for as long as 14 months before giving birth.
Some Camel Calves Change Color as They Grow
Camel calves can sometimes be born with completely white coats. As they mature and develop their adult fur, their coloring may gradually change to brown.
Arabic Has Many Words for Camels
Camels have such an important cultural and historical role in Arabic-speaking communities that there are reportedly more than 160 different Arabic words used to describe camels.
Supporting the Welfare of Working Camels
Working Animals International believes camels should be treated with kindness and compassion and should be protected from unnecessary suffering. The organization works to provide care and treatment for working camels in countries including Tunisia, Jordan, and India.
Supporting this work can help provide assistance to even more working camels. People can contribute by making a donation or taking part in fundraising activities to support the charity’s animal welfare efforts.
