The giant freshwater stingray may be the largest fish species living in freshwater, yet it remains one of the least studied of the world's enormous fish. Scientists still have limited information about how many exist, the habitats they prefer, and whether they occasionally move into marine waters where other stingray species are commonly found.

These ancient rays have undergone relatively little change over millions of years. They can reach lengths of up to 16.5 feet (5 meters), including their exceptionally long tails. Some accounts have estimated that they may weigh as much as 1,300 pounds, although such figures have not been officially verified. Measuring animals of this size is extremely difficult, making reliable weight estimates challenging.

Giant freshwater stingrays have wide, flattened bodies that are generally brown or gray, helping them remain concealed against river bottoms. Their broad bodies and long, whip-like tails give them a distinctive appearance. They occur in rivers throughout Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where they commonly remain hidden beneath sandy or muddy sediments.

Instead of relying solely on their mouths to breathe, these stingrays use specialized openings called spiracles located on the upper surface of their bodies. This adaptation allows them to remain partly buried beneath the riverbed while continuing to draw in oxygen-rich water.

Feeding and Behavior

Giant freshwater stingrays are carnivorous predators that primarily consume clams, crabs, and other small aquatic creatures. To locate potential prey, they rely on specialized sensory structures surrounding the mouth that can detect the weak electrical signals generated by other animals.

Although these rays possess a strong venomous spine on the tail, they are not naturally hostile toward people. The defensive barb can grow to approximately 15 inches in length and is mainly used when the animal is disturbed or feels threatened.

Because giant freshwater stingrays spend much of their lives concealed along the bottom of rivers, researchers have been unable to learn much about their natural behavior. They are not commonly hunted for food in many parts of Southeast Asia, although individuals can sometimes become unintentionally caught in fishing nets.

Once trapped, their enormous bodies and considerable strength can make them extremely difficult to handle. There have been reports of giant stingrays pulling boats for hours or even dragging fishing gear beneath the water.

Discovery and Conservation

The giant freshwater stingray belongs to the Dasyatidae family. Dutch scientist Pieter Bleeker first documented the species in Indonesia in 1852, but it received little scientific attention for more than 100 years. In 1990, researchers determined that it represented a distinct species. Later studies published in 2008 confirmed that it was the same animal originally described by Bleeker and identified it by its current scientific name, Urogymnus polylepis.

A freshwater stingray found in northern Australia was once regarded as a member of this species, but researchers eventually determined that it was a different species, Urogymnus dalyensis. Scientists have also suggested that certain populations found in separate geographic regions could eventually prove to represent additional distinct species.

The giant freshwater stingray is now classified as endangered. Its numbers have been reduced by habitat destruction, pollution, and various forms of human activity. A serious example occurred in Thailand's Mae Klong River in 2016, when industrial pollution killed at least 70 giant stingrays and contributed to a major reduction in the local population.

The species has also faced pressure from the aquarium trade. Although keeping and catching stingrays is now regulated or restricted in some regions, these activities have still contributed to conservation concerns surrounding the species.
